Train company promotion attracting record numbers of people to London’s attractions, new analysis reveals

The number of people taking advantage of half price entry to London’s attractions through a promotion offered by train companies has soared over the past 12 months, new analysis reveals.

New figures published in May 2010 show a 66% surge in downloads of the “2FOR1” vouchers in the last 12 months. A total of 1.31 million vouchers were downloaded from the www.daysoutguide.co.uk website – the equivalent of around 3,600 every day.

The deal provides two admission tickets for the price of one when customers present their voucher and train tickets to the box office at participating attractions.

Research also reveals that:

  • Only one in five people taking advantage of the offer would have visited the attraction if they had not held a 2FOR1 voucher.
  • Two thirds of people planned their day out specifically because they held a 2FOR1 vouchers

The average size of each group that uses a voucher is three and they spend on average £142.53 in total on their trip.

The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) which runs the scheme, attributes the booming take-up of the vouchers to:

  • The fact that families, forced into belt-tightening by tough economic times, are increasingly planning in advance and looking at discounted options when arranging day trips and short breaks.
  • An ever-lengthening list of London businesses covered by the promotion. The vouchers get users half price entry to 150 museums, exhibitions, sights and restaurants this summer.
  • The convenience of rail travel into London.

ATOC Chief Executive Michael Roberts said: “It is great news that ever greater numbers of people are taking advantage of deals to save money. This is a perfect example of how train companies are working together with other businesses to give people coming into London what they want.”
