Issue 14: Abandoned platforms

The following answer was published in Issue 14 (Jan/Feb 2006) of e-motion magazine.

Question

Who is responsible for abandoned platforms? Travelling on the main line up to London, I could not help but notice the bedraggled state of the abandoned platform at Esher station. How about clearing up the rubbish, digging out a few planter holes and letting some attractive shrubs grow?

Answer

We are responsible for the cleanliness and visual appeal of the platforms. We have to work closely with Network Rail because people carrying out work on these platforms must be safety trained. What we do when stations that are no longer used, particularly the one at Esher, is a subject that the Station Development Manager and I will be investigating in the new year.
