Issue 14: Waiting areas vs commercial interests

The following answer was published in Issue 14 (Jan/Feb 2006) of e-motion magazine.

Question

On the Reading and Windsor platforms (5 and 6) at Clapham Junction, the coffee shop occupies the former waiting room. It closes at 19:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, and 18:00 on Sundays, although I believe it should be open later. On cold, wet, dark evenings, passengers have to wait outside on the platform for trains. Are commercial interests becoming more important than passenger comfort and convenience?

Answer

Passenger comfort is of the utmost importance to us, and it is a problem when our tenants close before the contractually agreed time. This coffee shop should be open until 22:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, and 21:00 on Sundays. Its lease is up for renewal when we aim to resolve the closing-time issue.
