Issue 9: What happens to old trains?

The following answer was published in Issue 9 (Mar/Apr 2005) of e-motion magazine.

Question

I welcome the new Desiro trains, but what will happen to the old slam-door trains they are replacing?

Answer

The old slam-door trains are being returned to the leasing companies, where the vast majority are being broken up for scrap. However, some trains are being made available to organisations such as railway-preservation societies.
