The gap between train and platform is because many platforms are built on a sharp curve. This means that, even if the platform is at a more even height, train doors near the middle of each carriage will still be further away from the platform edge. Network Rail are responsible for the railway infrastructure and this includes platform height. There is now a common standard for the height and distance between platform and train, but this only applies where we rebuild or install new platforms. Unfortunately, to alter or rebuild platforms costs a considerable amount of money and Network Rail and the Department for Transport have to consider this among other investment priorities.
If passengers do need assistance getting on or off a train at a station, our employees are able to help. For passengers with disabilities, or who are less agile, we do offer an Assisted Travel service, which can be booked in advance. Please call 0800 5282 100 to book this service which will ensure that an employee is available to help you on and off the train, with a ramp if necessary.
