Follow this walk, taking in a beautiful priory, great views—and some fine pub refreshment, too

This enjoyable walk, starting at Liphook station and finishing at Haslemere station, passes through woods where coppicing is still practised, and a 12th-century former Augustinian priory, with a lunch stop at a pub on Fernhurst village green. Plenty of ups and downs make this an invigorating day out.
Leaving Liphook station by the ticket office, turn right, then take the steps to the bridge. Cross over and follow the road uphill for 600m until you reach Highfield Lane. Turn left, follow the sign for Highfield School, then turn right by the bridleway sign. After 100m, follow the Sussex Border Path sign and, in about 200m, take the path marked Sussex Border Path 1989.
Remain on the track. It climbs gently, arriving at a gate signed Access Land. Keep straight on, emerging to meet a wider track coming from your left. Turn right, pass a four-way sign, gate and cattle grid, and continue ahead, passing a restored farmhouse on your left. Continue straight on at a muddy three-way junction. The track descends through coppiced chestnut woodland. As it curves left downhill, take the first track on your right, veering left at the bottom by the three-way sign to reach a large beech tree. Follow the sign behind it to another in 80m and turn right along a faint track bordered by a ditch.
Emerge by an attractive house. Go right in about 20m, following a footpath sign through the gate at a garden fence, with a stable and lake on your left. Follow the fence and leave the paddock by another gate after 20m, crossing planks into conifer woods on a turf path. Ignore the turn-offs and emerge at a clearing, follow the arrow left, over a stream and straight on.
