Our driver training is extremely comprehensive and strict, and lasts for up to 18 months.
Drivers undertake a three-stage training programme to become qualified. Your salary increases as you successfully progress from one stage of training to the next.
Stage One - is the initial induction which includes an introduction to the ‘cab environment’ as well as learning the rules and regulations covering safe train operations. The course lasts approximately three months and finishes with test and assesments.
Stage Two - in this stage you begin your induction training, working mainly on electric or diesel trains. The length of training for the module is variable, but will last for a minimum of six months. In addition to theory work, it will also include practical train handling where you will work with a driver instructor based at your depot. During this training period, you will accumulate 255 hours of train driving under instruction on a variety of different shifts, including weekends and nights. Once this is complete you will be fully assessed on all elements of driver training. If you successfully complete your assessments, you will be a qualified Train Driver.
Stage Three - concerns ‘route learning’. The length of this training is variable but takes a minimum of three months, depending on your depot.
Following stages one and two, your knowledge will be practically assessed over each route applicable to your depot. Once successfully completed, you will be fully productive and rostered to drive trains. From here, there will be regular assessments to monitor your competence as a newly qualified driver, with training ongoing as and when required.
