Our Alcohol and drugs policy
The Transport and Works Act 1992 requires South West Trains to apply a strict policy on the use of alcohol, drugs and substances of abuse.
Through this policy, South West Trains aims to prevent risks to employees, customers and the public from the misuse of alcohol, drugs and substances of abuse by employees of South West Trains and Contractors.
One of the ways we intend to reduce these risks is by testing for alcohol and drug use among prospective new employees. To achieve this, all new entrants are required to attend a pre-employment medical.
Please be aware that should you be offered employement with South West Trains, you will be required to provide a urine sample for the purpose of screening for alcohol, drugs and substances of abuse.
If you subsequently test positive, you will not be employed by South West Trains. In accordance with Railway Group Standard GE/RT8070, we are unable to consider any other application from a candidate who has failed an alcohol and drug screen until five years has passed since the date of their original pre-employment medical.
In addition, for Safety Critical roles, in line with the South West Trains' Alcohol and Drugs Policy, you may be subject to unannounced random drug and alcohol screening at any time whilst on duty.
