Our commitment to the safety of our passengers is paramount. Please follow these simple guidelines to help ensure that your journey is trouble free.

While you are on the platform:

  • Always remain behind the yellow warning line and ensure pushchairs, prams and small children are securely held. This provides a safe distance between you and the platform edge, particularly when trains pass through the platform at high speed.
  • Take special care when using stairways, escalators or bridges, particularly in cold or wet weather and when conditions may be slippery.
  • NEVER leave belongings unattended as this may cause a security alert.
  • Do not try and retrieve personal items dropped onto the railway line - ask a member of staff or use the Help Point located on most station platforms to request assistance.
  • NEVER cross railway lines except by means of footbridges and subways or other designated crossings provided for your use by special arrangement.

Boarding and leaving the train:

  • Always take care when joining or leaving the train as some platforms have gaps between the train and the platform edge.
  • Trains with power-operated doors: Power-operated doors on South West Trains’ services will be closed up to 30 seconds before departure.  Orange lights on the side of each coach are lit when the doors are released for opening.  NEVER attempt to board these trains when the warning signal is sounding and the doors are about to close, and do not try to prevent the doors from closing.
  • When leaving the train: Wait by the door in the carriage vestibule until the door “OPEN” button is lit.  Press the button to open the door.  Be sure to take all your belongings with you.

Heritage Trains

Trains on the Brockenhurst to Lymington line are mostly operated by Heritage Trains fitted with slam doors that are electronically locked when the train is in motion.

  • When boarding these trains, please close the door securely behind you, taking care not to trap your fingers or clothing.
  • DO NOT lean out of the window while the train is in motion.
  • When the train has stopped in the station, lower the window and use the external door handle to open the door (there may be a short delay as you will not be able to open the door until the Guard has switched off the electronic lock).
  • If you notice that a door is open or not closed properly whilst the train is in motion, tell the Guard immediately or pull the emergency alarm chain to stop the train.

Safety Information

Safety information will be displayed in all trains.  This provides advice on actions to be taken in the event of an emergency, along with details of where safety equipment is located.  Please take time to read the information prior to the start of your journey.

Safety equipment on board

Each of our trains carries equipment provided for your safety.  This will include:

  • Emergency alarms (an alarm chain on Heritage Trains) coloured red, located throughout each carriage and in each toilet.
  • Emergency exit handles located above or adjacent to the passenger exit doors in each vestibule of power door trains.
  • Fire extinguishers and First Aid boxes for use by the train crew in the event of an emergency.

When travelling by train, please take careful note of where all these items are located in relation to your seat.

The above information is provided as a guide only.  Please be aware that, depending on the type of train on which you may be travelling, this equipment may vary in type and location.

Stopping the train in an emergency

In the case of an immediate threat to life, it may be necessary to activate one of the emergency alarms, which are located throughout each carriage above or adjacent to the windows and doors, and in each toilet.  Activation of this alarm will alert the train crew and stop the train.

Keeping safe in an emergency

In most emergencies it is safest to remain on board the train.  Move yourself and others along the train and away from any obvious hazard – provide assistance to those who may be less able than yourself where possible.  Do not alight from the train until instructed to do so by a member of train crew or other rail staff.  If you do find yourself in imminent danger and cannot move along the train:

  • Ensure the train has come to a stand by activating the emergency alarm.
  • Where necessary on power door trains, activate the emergency door release handle.
  • Always alight on the side away from the track.  If there is a track on both sides, first check to ensure that there are no other trains coming then move off the track immediately.
  • Do not touch or step on any rails – certain rails may still be conducting an electrical current.

Safety information will be displayed in all trains (except slam door trains). This provides advice on actions to be taken in the event of an emergency, along with details of where safety equipment is located. Please take time to read the information prior to the start of your journey.
