Blackfriars Settlement is committed to improving the quality of life of Southwark’s local people

Thursday lunchtime at Blackfriars Settlement, and a group of over 50s are chatting and laughing. They are regulars at the lunch club, held three times a week at this community centre on Rushworth Street, a short walk from London Waterloo station. As well as a good meal, it’s a chance for the older residents to make friends, have fun and learn new skills; this afternoon, they are taking part in a singing workshop.
Upstairs, a group prepare lunch in a purpose-built kitchen. Afflicted by mental health problems, they are enrolled on a three-year programme of educational and creative workshops—from painting and photography to computers and gardening—designed to develop their personal and social potential. The fruits of their work are everywhere, from the photos in the kitchen to the beautiful quilts, cushions and toys in the crafts room.
Blackfriars Settlement also organises play sessions for the under fives as well as clubs and workshops for young people. It also offers adult literacy and numeracy courses, English lessons for speakers of other languages, and a 10-week programme that prepares people for entering the workplace.
