Corporate social responsibility is important to us. It is our contract of commitments to our stakeholders and is at the heart of how we do business.
At South West Trains and Island Line we have adopted the values of: honesty, respect, recognition, learning, teamwork, professionalism and communication. These values form the core of our corporate conscience and they are reflected in everything we do.
Corporate social responsibility covers every aspect of our business, from how we treat our staff, to how we interact with our neighbours: from how we select our suppliers, to how we clean our trains.
We have adopted the following CSR mission statement to guide us on our journey:
“We will take our corporate responsibility seriously and always have in mind the best interests of all our stakeholders, whether they be employees, passengers, business partners or the communities we serve."
“We will comply with all legislation and work to protect the environment wherever possible, monitoring our performance and striving for continuous improvement.”
This promise forms an integral part of our business plan, where we set goals and targets to ensure we deliver. Our key business goals cover the six areas of safety, performance, customer service, cost efficiency, revenue generation and people and they provide the framework for our corporate responsibility strategy. Many of our CSR objectives are covered by functional plans such as our Safety and Environment Plan, our Communications Strategy, our Customer Service Strategy and our People-Centred Strategy.
As a train operator we have a responsibility to provide passengers with a punctual reliable service, which links in with other public transport to deliver integrated transport solutions. By doing this we will encourage others to turn to public transport - which is good news for our business in terms of increased revenue, but which is also good news for the environment in terms of reducing pollution and road congestion.
By doing what we do well, we help the economy of the country as a whole and that of the local communities we serve. We provide a route to work for hundreds of thousands of people every day, we keep families united, provide vital arteries for more rural locations and help support some of the country’s key leisure destinations.
As a wholly-owned subsidiary, our CSR strategy is completely in-line with that of our parent company Stagecoach, and fully supports the corporate commitment to encourage more people to use public transport and in doing so not only ensures the future success of the Stagecoach Group, but also of the communities in which it operates around the world.
Our CSR work is underpinned by Stagecoach’s Code of Business Conduct which confirms our core values and makes commitments as to how we will deal with our employees, suppliers, customers, competitors and the wider communities we serve.
Stagecoach’s commitment to mitigating health and safety risks to their people, customers and environment can be found on their website at www.stagecoachgroup.com.
