Schoolchildren around the country may be cheering the arrival of the summer holidays but, for some, the harsh reality of “carefree” days can be inactivity, boredom and anti-social or even criminal behaviour.
That’s why Eastleigh Borough Council has set up Street Sport, a packed programme of summer events offering children aged eight to 16 years old professional coaching in football, basketball, skateboarding and golf.
“The aim of Street Sport is to encourage community cohesion through teamwork, promote physical activity and educate youngsters about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle,” explains James Coney, Sports Development Officer, Eastleigh Borough Council.
As well as improving personal fitness, boosting self-confidence and promoting social interaction, the children also get an opportunity to win medals and cups in organised competitions between teams from Hamble, Boyatt Wood, Eastleigh and Hedge End.
Street Sport is sponsored by South West Trains and has received financial backing from Sportsmatch, a government-funded scheme set up to help fund grass roots and community sports in England. It is also supported by Eastleigh Housing Association, Swaythling Housing Association and Eastleigh Healthy Living Network.
“South West Trains is pleased to support this extremely worthwhile scheme that will benefit the young people of Eastleigh, providing an environment in which they can have fun and keep fit at the same time,” says Duncan Cobb, Eastleigh Station Manager.
Street Sport starts on Monday 25 July with activities running through until 31 August at venues across the borough, including Fleming Park Leisure Centre, Hamble Community Sports Complex, Wildern School in Hedge End, and Wyvern School, as well as parks and other open spaces near to local housing areas. No booking is required beforehand, so just turn up and take part. Football and basketball courses are free, while a small charge will be made for golf and skateboarding sessions.
