Major improvement works in the Bath Spa area from Saturday 18 July to Monday 31 August 2015

Description

This summer the £7.5 billion modernisation of the Great Western Main Line reaches the historic city of Bath when Network Rail will be carrying out major engineering projects in Box Tunnel and along the line to the east of Bath.

Significant sections of the railway track will be lowered to allow the installation of the overhead lines that will provide the power to the new Super Express Trains. The work will be carried out in two phases the first of which starts on Saturday 18 July, and the second on Saturday 1 August with both due for completion on Monday 31 August. These major works will mean that there will be changes to services that travel through Bath Spa.

Phase 1: 18 - 31 July

The railway between Chippenham and Bath Spa will be closed, affecting journeys between these stations and journeys via Melksham - the Avon Valley services will run normally. High Speed Train services to/from London Paddington will be diverted, increasing journey times by up to 30 minutes.

Phase 2: 01 - 31 August

All lines to the east of Bath will be closed, in addition to the continuing work on the railway between Chippenham and Bath Spa . The line will also be closed between Trowbridge and Bath Spa and all services to / from Bath Spa will run from the west. Replacement coach / bus services will serve stations to the east.

Phase 1: 18 - 31 July

The railway between Chippenham and Bath Spa will be closed. The following alterations will apply:

Between Bristol Temple Meads / Bath Spa / Chippenham and London Paddington

One train per hour will run between Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington, calling at Bath Spa and Chippenham, running on a diverted route with increased journey times of approximately 30 minutes (normal calling pattern from Swindon).  

A second hourly train service will run between Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington running non-stop to / from Swindon (normal calling pattern from Swindon).  

Trans-Wilts services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham and Chippenham

Some Trans-Wilts services via Melksham will be replaced by buses. Connections will be available to train services at Chippenham and Trowbridge.

Westbury, Trowbridge, Bradford-upon-Avon, Avoncliff and Freshford to Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads

Services from Westbury, Warminster, Weymouth and Portsmouth Harbour to Bristol and Cardiff Central will be unaffected but subject to some minor alterations.

Phase 2: 01 - 31 August

All lines to the east of Bath will be closed, in addition to the continuing work on the railway between Chippenham and Bath Spa. The following alterations will apply:

Between Bath Spa and London Paddington

One train per hour will run between Bath Spa and London Paddington via Bristol Temple Meads with increased journey times of approximately 30 minutes.

Trains will run non-stop between Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads and call at Swindon, Didcot Parkway, Reading and London Paddington.        

Between Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads    

Three trains per hour will run between Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads.     

One train per hour will run between Bath Spa and London Paddington via Bristol Temple Meads with increased journey times of approximately 30 minutes.      

One train per hour will run between Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads (non-stop).     

One stopping service will run between Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads calling at Keynsham and Oldfield Park.      

Additional services will run during the morning and evening peak, calling at Filton Abbey Wood.    

Between Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington      

One train per hour will run between Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington.      

Trains will run non-stop between Bristol Temple Meads and Swindon and call at Didcot Parkway, Reading and London Paddington.      

Between Chippenham and London Paddington      

An hourly service will run between Chippenham and London Paddington for part of the day.    

An hourly service will run between Chippenham and Swindon.   

Between Chippenham and Bath Spa     

There will be a half-hourly replacement bus service between Chippenham and Bath Spa with an approximate journey time of 1 hour.     

Between Chippenham and Bristol Temple Meads     

Customers from Chippenham to Bristol Temple Meads are advised to travel via Swindon. This will mean an increased journey time of up to 45 minutes.     

Between Portsmouth Harbour and Cardiff Central via Bristol Temple Meads     

An hourly service to / from Portsmouth Harbour will be diverted via Melksham and Chippenham and will start / terminate at Swindon. Trains will call additionally at Melksham (every other hour).   

Connections will be available at Swindon to Bristol Temple Meads , South Wales and London Paddington.    

Replacement bus connections will be available at Westbury for Trowbridge, Bradford-upon-Avon and Bath Spa.   

Between Weymouth and Bristol Temple Meads via Bath Spa     

Services from Weymouth will start / terminate at Westbury with some re-timings to the normal timetable.    

Replacement bus connections will be available at Frome and Westbury for Bath Spa.    

Train connections will be available at Westbury for Trowbridge. Customers for Bradford-on-Avon, Avoncliffe and Freshford should change at Trowbridge for replacement bus connections.   

A peak only replacement bus service will run between Castle Cary and Bristol Temple Meads.   

Between Westbury / Trowbridge / Bradford-on-Avon and Bath Spa / Bristol Temple Meads   

Replacement bus services will operate in the Avon Valley:  

Between Westbury and Bath Spa - an hourly express bus service.   

Between Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon and Bath Spa - a bus service every 30 minutes.   

Between Freshford, Avoncliff and Bath Spa - an hourly bus service. At Freshford buses will be unable to gain access to the station. Buses will call at the following locations, The Inn, The Old Bakery on High Street, the School and the Village Hall. 

A shuttle service will also run between Avoncliff and Bradford-on-Avon.   

Buses will run run in groups to cater for the numbers of people who would normally travel on a train. Where necessary additional bus services will run during peak periods.   

South West Trains services from Saturday 1 to Monday 31 August, will only run between London Waterloo and Westbury. Replacement buses operated by First Great Western will run between Westbury and Bristol.  

Passengers for Bristol and South Wales should use altered First Great Western services to Swindon, for connections to the London Paddington to Bristol and South Wales routes. Some additional South West Trains services will run between Salisbury and Westbury to supplement the First Great Western services.

Amended South West Trains services from Tuesday 4 to Friday 7 August

Description

Engineering work is taking place over some parts of the South West Trains network. The following trains are amended:

Monday to Thursday

The 23:05 London Waterloo to Poole service will be replaced by a bus between Southampton Central and Poole.

The 23:50 London Waterloo to Reading service is replaced by a bus between Virginia Water and Reading.

Thursday

The 00:42 London Waterloo to Strawberry Hill (via Wimbledon) service will not stop at stations from Wimbledon to Norbiton. A bus will run from London Waterloo to Strawberry Hill (via Wimbledon).

Tuesday to Friday

The 00:05 London Waterloo to Bournemouth service will be replaced by a bus between Southampton Central and Bournemouth.

The 01:05 London Waterloo to Southampton Central service will be replaced by a bus between Woking and Basingstoke.

The 04:25 Guildford to London Waterloo service will not stop at Woking. A bus will run from Guildford to Surbiton.
