Energy efficiency

We have been working with the Carbon Trust to identify ways of reducing our energy use. It’s not just about asking staff to turn off PC screens and lights at the end of the day; we are also investing £130,000 in energy efficiency improvements across our stations and depots in early 2009. In addition, we will be launching a number of initiatives to reduce the energy we use on our trains.

Recycling going strong

Last year, we introduced paper/card recycling programmes at a number of key stations—Richmond, Wimbledon, Portsmouth Harbour, Southampton Central and Bournemouth—which has seen the amount of waste recycled by our stations double and our overall recycling rate increase to around 20%. We aim to raise this even further during 2009 by extending the paper/card recycling scheme to more stations.
