Olympic events will lead to busier trains and more congestion at peak commuter times and various points throughout the day across our network. The London 2012 website (www.london2012.com) offers advice for both businesses and individuals regarding travel during the Games. Please follow the link Get Ahead Of The Games for further information. Passengers may wish to consider altering the times they travel over the Olympic period if at all possible.

What have we done to help with your journey?

Frequently Asked Questions

At the moment, there are a lot of station building and track maintenance works taking place. Will this work be completed before the games?

All the station building works, including the Waterloo Balcony Scheme, the station rebuilding at Basingstoke, and the Grant Road entrance redevelopment at Clapham Junction are due for completion before the Games.

Network Rail’s major schemes such as the new East London Line platforms at Clapham Junction and other major renewals across our network, are also planned to be completed before the Games.

Unless unexpected problems or failures of vital equipment require emergency repairs, we are expecting to have all stations and lines open to run the best possible service during the Games.

Will South West Trains be running trains later or through the night for people returning from Olympic events?

We have arranged with the Olympic Delivery Authority and the Department for Transport to alter some late evening services after 2330. The following trains will run later than normal:

  • 2338 London Waterloo to Reading will start at 2350 and the connection from Ascot to Farnham will be held.
  • 2340 London Waterloo to Salisbury will start at 2355.
  • 2345 London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour will start at 0005.
  • 0005 London Waterloo to Bournemouth will start at 0030.

An extra train will run at 0038 from London Waterloo to Staines, and the 0050 London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour will run every evening of the Games.

Some extra services will run on Sunday mornings where the normal timetable would start too late for people to travel to events.

We will normally be unable to run overnight trains after the 0105 from London Waterloo to Southampton. Our trains still need to be cleaned and maintained overnight and we will be using all available staff to run the planned service.

What’s happening about the cultural events in London at the same time?

We are looking at all the cultural events and we will run longer trains to serve them where we can. Because we already plan to make maximum use of our trains, the normal timetable will run except for the extra services shown above.

What’s happening about events at the other Olympic locations such as Wimbledon and Eton Dorney?

For the water sport events at Eton Dorney (near Windsor) we will run extra early morning weekend services and longer trains at other times.

For the Olympic Tennis at Wimbledon we will stop some of our main line services at Wimbledon, as we do for the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

What is happening about the train service to Weymouth?

We can only run five-car trains to and from Weymouth because there is a limited power supply. We are still looking at ways of running extra trains - either electric or diesel - to Weymouth at peak times. Other operators will be running longer trains and a few extra trains to and from Weymouth.
