A South West Trains’ guard based at Salisbury has raised over £2700 for the Help the Heroes charity through a series of fundraising activities.
Nigel Crow, who also lives in Salisbury, saw the opportunity of the last slam door train running on the Lymington to Brockenhurst line as a once in a lifetime chance to raise some money for the charity. As well as creating a DVD to sell, showcasing a cab ride on one of the last ever slam door trains, Nigel also arranged for the heritage station sign from Lymington Pier station to be auctioned for Help for Heroes. Thanks to his infectious enthusiasm Nigel also received support from other members of staff, in particular from Kris Jendesen, a driver for South West Trains, who arranged for some merchandising to be sold at Salisbury station.
Commenting on his fundraising efforts, Nigel Crow, South West Trains’ guard said: “South West Trains employs a significant number of former service personnel and Salisbury is obviously at the heart of military bases. It was therefore natural to raise some money towards Help for Heroes, and the last slam door train running on the Lymington line gave us a unique opportunity to help with this. We are delighted to be supporting such a worthy charity.”
Bryn Parry, co-founder of Help for Heroes said: “When Emma and I decided to do our bit to help wounded servicemen in 2007 we had no idea so many people across the UK would decide to join us and together, create the Help for Heroes phenomenon. People have run, climbed, cycled, swum, parachuted, baked, in fact done just about anything honest and decent to raise money to support our blokes. The money raised, £65m to date, is all used to provide direct, practical support to those wounded in the service of our country. We have already spent millions of pounds and we have a shopping list of future projects that will ensure they get the very best. We may not be able to prevent them from being hurt but we can certainly do our bit to help them get better.
“Nigel’s wonderful fundraising is hugely welcomed, he should be congratulated and, on behalf of all those who the money will benefit, thanked. Well done Nigel; Great effort!”
