Using Oyster on South West Trains

Season Tickets

Travelcard Season Tickets bought from nominated Oyster retail outlets are loaded onto Oyster cards, and their validity is exactly the same as a printed Travelcard ticket.

Pay as you go

From 2 January 2010 you are be able to use your Oyster pay as you go on our services within Zones 1-9. With Oyster pay as you go you can travel around London using the same card on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground and National Rail services using credit on your Oyster card to pay for your journeys as you go.

To make sure you pay the correct fare, always touch in and touch out by placing your Oyster card on a yellow reader on automatic ticket gates or platform validators, found by station entrances and exits, at the start and end of your journey. For trams and buses you only need to touch in at the start of your journey. An Oyster card can hold your Travelcard or Bus & Tram Pass season ticket and credit to pay as you go, giving you the added convenience and flexibility of only having one card to travel around London.

Are you using your Oyster Travel Card and pay as you go together?

If you are planning to use Oyster pay as you go on National Rail services in London but outside the Zones covered by your Travelcard, you will need to set an Oyster Extension Permit (OEP) on  your card before you travel. If you travel without an OEP you may be liable to a Penalty Fare or prosecution. Please note the following important points about OEP:

  • Only set your OEP to your card just before you make your extension journey
  • You must have a minimum £1.50 pay as you go balance on your Oyster card to set one
  • OEP can be set at any Tube or London Overground station ticket office or touchscreen ticket machine; Oyster Ticket Stops; selected National Rail ticket offices or self service ticket machines  displaying the Oyster card reader logo
  • An OEP remains on your card until you touch out at the end of your journey
  • When touching out at your destination station, the OEP will be cleared from your Oyster card and the correct fare for the extension journey will be deducted from your pay as you go balance

To find out more about OEP please visit www.tfl.gov.uk/oyster or natioanlrail.co.uk/oyster
