Helping to reduce cycle crime

We are working closely with the British Transport Police (BTP) to reduce cycle crime at our stations. There are also lots of ways you can help too...

What we are doing…

  • Improving cycle storage areas with CCTV coverage and ensuring they enable casual surveillance from staff and passers-by.
  • Carrying out high-visibility BTP patrols in conjunction with our Rail Community Officers (RCOs), who also regularly keep watch on our cycle storage areas.
  • Funding the BTP ImmobiTag electronic biketagging initiative, which allows a bike to be traced back to its owner using a unique ID.
  • Organising cycle surgeries at stations and offering advice on best security practice and fitting of ImmobiTags.
  • Enlisting the help of major companies Evans and Zyro, the UK distributor of ABUS locks, in providing discount vouchers to purchase correct locking devices.
  • Undertaking covert operations.

What you can do…

  • Spend a minimum of 20% of the bike’s value on a lock and ensure it is Sold Secure rated, which means it has undergone rigorous testing.
  • Always secure your bike in the specific cycle storage area and use a minimum of two locks, ensuring both wheels and frames are secured to the stand provided. Do not allow these locks to fall to the ground, where they are vulnerable, and ensure minimal movement of your bike once it is secured. You can also remove the saddle.
  • Ensure you have a record of your cycle, including the serial number, make and model, and take a photograph of it.
  • Register your cycle on immobilise.com—it is free and is used by all police forces in the country when cycles are recovered.
