Our Met Desk has issued a weather alert across the network today, Thursday and Friday this week. Hot temperatures are forecast on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with thunderstorms predicted on Thursday and Friday.
Hot weather affects the steel rails that our trains run on and can cause them to buckle. Rail temperatures can be more than 10 degrees higher than the air temperature. When air temperatures reach 30 degrees, the track can be more than 40, meaning that we need to introduce temporary speed restrictions.
This can lead to a reduction in the number of trains running on the affected routes in order to limit congestion as well as knock on delays.
We currently have engineers out at various locations across our network monitoring temperatures.
The situation can change quite rapidly in these conditions, so please continue to check before you travel with us today.
