    What's on-board South West Trains

There are lots of things available on our trains to help make your journey as enjoyable as possible. This includes things like catering options, to help get you that quick snack to curb your hunger until you reach your destination. Or, enjoy a complimentary drink and biscuit in first class on your way to work (restrictions apply, see below).

With over half of our trains now having free WiFi, you can stay connected to the digital world for longer without having to worry about eating into your data tariff. It’s never been easier to find that little extra time to finish that important piece of work, keep up to date on your social media or keep the kids busy.

Need to have some peace and quiet from a stressful day? Then take a seat in our Quiet Zones especially designed for you. Look out for the blue labels on the windows and doors identifying the Quiet Zone.

We can facilitate bicycles on our trains, although it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with our cycle policy before you travel.

South West Trains do not permit smoking (including e-cigarettes) on our trains or at our stations. Should you wish to, you can smoke outside the stations in our car parks.

To help keep you informed and safe on our train we employ ‘legends’ - well, at least that’s what our customers think.

From our fantastic drivers getting you to your destination on time to our experienced and knowledgeable guards who will be sure to bring a warm and friendly smile to your journey, you can rest assured you are travelling in safe hands.

    On-train Wi-Fi

Over half our services currently offer free Wi-Fi. Look out for signs in coaches to see if yours is one of them.

Our on-board Wi-Fi terms and conditions can be found here.

How do I access the Wi-Fi service? chevron-down

Where WiFi is available, find the network ‘South West Trains’ and request to join. You’ll be directed to the portal page, and if using the service for the first time, you’ll need to register and accept the terms and conditions. After this, you can just login with your chosen username and password.

How can I get help using the service? chevron-down

Just call the customer support team on 03300 889327, or email

    Why can’t I reach all websites? chevron-down

Some sites deemed inappropriate or offensive are restricted. Also, you won’t be able to watch catch-up TV or video sharing sites, or download very large files, to make sure we can offer a reliable service to all passengers.

What service speed can I expect? chevron-down

While we aim to offer a reliable service, due to the geographical expanse of our network, there may be areas where the signal is not as strong as we would like. Should you lose your connection, you will be able to reconnect without logging back in.

As the bandwidth is shared with all users on the train, you may experience a slight decrease in service speed as more passengers connect.

What’s your “Fair Use Policy”? chevron-down

So that we can offer all users of our Wi-Fi system a reliable, smooth service, we have in place a Fair Use Policy. In addition to those sites which are restricted as mentioned above, we reserve the right to restrict a user's connection speed, or terminate their session, if the level of use is deemed by us as excessive and therefore to detrimental to other users.

    On-station Wi-Fi

Free WiFi is also available at the following five stations: Aldershot, Basingstoke, Farnborough, Guildford and Woking.

The service is provided by Sky Cloud and completely free to use throughout the concourses, platforms and waiting areas at all five stations.

On-board catering is provided by Rail Gourmet on the following routes: London Waterloo to Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Exeter St Davids (subject to availability).

Sandwiches, pastries and cakes, savoury snacks, breakfast dishes, and a selection of soft, alcoholic and hot drinks are served from a trolley service.

An evening buffet service is available during peak times on trains from London Waterloo to Bournemouth and Portsmouth.
